Do you have a passion for local news and stories? Do you live in Kalbarri and want to contribute to our growing community? Do you enjoy working autonomously and have an interest in publishing and print media? Kalbarri Town Talk is looking for a new Editor!
After almost 2 years and 21 editions, our current editor, Fred Porter, is moving on. “It’s fair to say I have a bit going on,” laughs Fred. “During Covid and after Seroja, I felt a strong desire to return home and contribute in any way I could. Over the past 3 years I have reconnected with family and old friends, and made a stack of new friends I’ll never forget. Kalbarri now has a variety of new annual events, our local paper is looking great and keeps appearing each month, and we’ve revamped and digitally transformed our local operations. I’m proud of the little things I have achieved during this time, but the world is calling me and whilst this is hardly farewell forever, it’s time to hang up my editors hat, at least for now. I think it’s important that the Editor live in Kalbarri, or at least spends much of their time there, and has a passion for publishing the voices of everyone in our community, not just the most popular opinions.”
Fred said his biggest challenge as Editor of Town Talk was gathering the stories each month. “It’s nothing new, writing is hard and in the year 2024 it’s easy to get your thoughts out on social media in a flash. We do have a few regular contributors, and many occasional ones. It’s not easy to think of something new to write every month, and you definitely can’t please all the people, all the time. There is a long list of previous Editors here, all saying the same thing. However our desire to keep publishing Town Talk hasn’t changed – keeping our local paper alive in Kalbarri is important and the right person would find this job fun. I know I certainly did.”
If you can read Kalbarri Town Talk, you can write for it. Are you up for the challenge?
